Willington Conservation Commission
04/03/11 Special Meeting/Site Walk Minutes
Purpose of Walk: Begin to familiarize commission members with boundaries and features of the 138+ acre Knowlton property.
Site walk commenced at 2:00pm at the Blue Trail crossing on Marsh Road.
Commission Members Present:~ P. Andersen, K. Demers, C. Jordan, R. Shabot
Others Present: D. Jordan, C. Shabot, S. Shabot
Observations/Features: Stone walls, old logging access roads that could be part of a future trail system; large glacial erratic boulders and rocky outcroppings; a large vernal pool active with many wood frogs and macro invertebrates; several well-used ATV trails; several deposits of commercial, automotive and household trash – most fairly close to Mason Road.
Activities to be undertaken as soon as possible: Determine access points of ATVs and post signs; replace boundary markers that have been removed and add boundary markers along Mason Road, Marsh Road and Boston Turnpike; put additional boundary markers on interior boundaries; remove trash before new growth obscures it and inhibits removal
Activities for near future: Map important features with GPS, determine an official name for the property; erect a sign in conformance with DEP grant requirements
Possible future Activities: Conduct a natural resource inventory; develop a management plan
Site walk ended at 4:30pm
Respectfully submitted: Peter Andersen, secretary pro tempore
